Fort Steele Historical Park
Fort Steele, British Columbia, August 2006
Before leaving the area of Cranbrook, we had to visit the historical site of Fort Steele. Fort Steele has preserved and restored historical building to create a historical town in 1890.
With a fee you can enter the town and spend the day in the 1800's. There are candy shops and stores to visit and buy food or souvenirs. Walk around the town or take a carriage. Spend a bit more and get a chance to ride the train. Stand in-line and watch presentations and shows about Fort Steele right in the old playhouse. Make sure to arrive early so you can take your time in the city because it's only open between 10am and 6pm.
Fort Steele's peek was during the Kootnay Gold rush and thrived as the commercial, social and administrative centre of the region. However, Fort Steele declined after 1989, when the BC Southern Railway bypassed the town in favour of nearby Cranbrook.
Location: Fort Steele is located on Highway 93/95, 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Cranbrook, east of Kimberley. |
