Cathedral Grove/MacMillan Provincial Park
Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, May 15, 2006
This small provincial park has a big existence. Cathedral Grove is a short wheel chair accessible trail that wanders through old growth Douglas-fir forest. Some of the trees are 800 years old.
In 1997 a severe windstorm toppled many of the old trees. Fortunately it allowed sun to shine in and start a new generation of growth. And the decomposition of the fallen old growth helps nurtures the soils.
Note: This park has limited parking and spans on both sides of the high way. Make sure to slow down for unaware tourists.
