Woodlands

Woodlands Provincial Asylum for the Insane
New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, January 22, 2006

Yes... this WAS a functioning Insane Asylum from May 17, 1878 to January 1996. Woodlands has been known for it's physical and sexual abuse towards it's mentally and physically disabled residents.

With some research, we found out how disturbing the environment was for the residents: very cold showers, skin-burniing hot baths, involuntary-sterilization, many patients labeled "retarded" and easily ignored when they complained. As well, there used to be a cemetery on the grounds, but then turned to a barbeque pit for the residents to enjoy... with patient tomb stones used to line the fire pit and walkway.

It's certainly not open to the public now (littered with signs of "No Trespassing"), but of course curiousity got the better of us and ventured onto the grounds. It's an amazing building with a creepy presence. And too think that it was still up and running until 10 years ago.
