ABOUT GEMMA'S DRAWINGS
Of course, all little kids start drawing when
they are young. But I would spend my time tracing Prince Charming
in the Walt Disney book "Cinderella" until I got it just
the way I liked it.
I strongly believe that drawing is the foundation
to all artistic ability.
By studying realism and imaginary imagery you
can push your artistic boundaries.
I spent many evenings after school drawing pictures
in my sketch book. Pictures from still-lifes, nature, other pictures
and straight from my head.
My sketch book became more of a mini portfolio
than an idea book.
Hardly any of my drawings became paintings or
sculptures, but it helped me with understanding light, shadows,mid-tones,
positive and negative space in future projects.

A study to warm up my hands and eyes for future drawings and paintings. I like to use accessible models for my profile sketches, so I'll either use myself or friends.

BIRTHDAY PRESENT - Jen 2003
As usual I had no idea what to get for a birthday present.
So I spent some time drawing one of my favourite internet
images. It's not as complete as I originally wanted, but that's
all I could do with the little time I had.
MEDIUM: Pencil on sketch paper.

ANGEL 01
I enjoy the look of fairies and pixies. So I spent an evening
drawing one that I had been thinking about all week. I also
saw it as a possible sculpture but I left it on paper just to
keep it to the imagination

ANGEL 02
Again, another drawing of a fairy that came to mind. I elaborated
and made her quite awkward but again just an idea that was materialized
on paper.

DRAGON
I used to spend hours drawing demons and surreal imagery that
was dark and scary. So I decided to created one that was more
traditional than what I was previously doing. A dragon came
to mind.

EVELYN
In university I was enrolled in nude modelling classes: 3 courses,
3 hours each, 3 times a day, 3 times a week, for 4 years. Whether
is was drawing, painting or sculpture, you can imagine I spent
a lot of time studying the human form.
